Brasilia Travel Guide

Brasília, the capital of Brazil, is a planned city. Inaugurated in 1960 in the Central Highlands of Brazil, it is a masterpiece of modernist architecture. Brasilia is also an important transportation hub for travel within Brazil and a great place to visit.

About Brasilia

Brasilia covers an area of 2204 sq. miles (5802 square Km) and is estimated to have a population of 2.5 million people being the capital of Brazil and the seat of the federal government. Brasília is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Palácio do Itamaraty

Palácio do ItamaratyOne of the most beautiful modernist structures ever created (designed by Niemeyer with landscaping by Burle Marx and detailing by Milton Ramos), the Palácio do Itamaraty now serves as a ceremonial reception hall for the Department of Foreign Affairs. The interior is a match for the outside, so it’s worth taking the tour.

The ultra-modern structure - mostly open space inside - is decorated with rich antique furnishings of Persian carpets, hand-carved jacaranda-wood furniture, and 18th- and 19th-century paintings. Somehow it really works.
