Brazilians routinely eat some veggies that may be unfamiliar to you: chuchus, maxixe, jilo, fresh palm hearts and mandioca (also called “aipim”). Brazilian pumpkins:”aboboras” in Portuguese they are wonderful, they taste as good as they look, used as a side dish and also to make a superb dessert called “doce de abobora”. Spices & condiments: from the ones you are familiar with like bay leaves to one’s you’ve never seen bafore,it’s a lot of fun to shop at these markets!
Try the extremely hot Brazilian peppers called “malagueta” or “pimenta do cheiro” from the Amazon(my favorite). Cookies & Crackers:depending on where you’re you’ll see giant bags of cookies that are sold by kilo or grams. For packaged ones, try the supermarket or bakeries. My favorite cookie is “biscoito de polvilho”,salted or sweet, they are light and airy, and melt in your mouth! Chicken, eggs & fish:you might be surprised, but they are also sold at the street markets, out of refrigerated trucks!
